Meet the Team – Hello, I’m Afshan Ullah, Clinical Therapist

Embark with us on an exploration as we spotlight the individuals embodying the core values of Radius. In the post below, we further this exploration by introducing Afshan – an exceptional individual who personifies the essence of Radius and its mission.

Why did you choose to work at Radius?

I chose to work at Radius because of the courage and strength our young clients demonstrate by walking through our doors is inspiring.  I had the opportunity to partner with Radius when I was working at The ROCK and was instantly taken in by the dedication of the agency.  The individual attention to each client and the diligent goal to make a change for children, youth and families who had dealt with interpersonal trauma solidified my resolve to work for Radius.

What attracted you to work with children/youth who have been abused, witnessed abuse, neglected, or witnessed domestic violence?

I have always gravitated towards working with children because of the resiliency, strength, and hope that they can demonstrate in the worst situations.  To be able to assist children, youth and families build their futures free from abuse, neglect and violence is truly an honour.

Can you share a memorable experience or achievement that you’ve had while working at Radius?

My most memorable moments at Radius have always been those where our young clients realize the impact of their traumatic experience and are able to leave Radius feeling empowered as survivors rather than victims.  Watching that transition is always remarkable for me.

Are there any specific projects or initiatives you’ve been involved in that you’re particularly proud of? Why?

I have had the opportunity through various community committees and our fundraising lead, Margie, to provide resources and strategies for change that can be considered out of the box.  Being able to bring a concerned community and clients in need to the same table has always been important and special to me.

What motivates and inspires you in your work?

My four daughters have always been my inspiration in my work.  Through them I have a front row view of the difficulties our youth face.  Watching them navigate this new world of technology and social media, I learn the meaning of being brave and resilient. Through their eyes I see the hope for a better tomorrow.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in this field?

Working with individuals who have been affected by trauma is hard work.  Having an environment that is supportive, safe, and non-judgmental for our clients as well as the therapists is imperative.   Anyone considering working in this field should prioritize a setting that allows growth, development and learning from seasoned experts.

Is there anything else you would want to share with us?

I believe in the proverb that it takes a village to raise a child.  With everyone working collectively to support our most vulnerable assets – our youth -we can hope for a community free from abuse, neglect, and violence.

In closing, we would like to express our gratitude to Afshan for sharing her valuable insights and perspectives. Thank you for your time, candor, and meaningful contributions to this conversation.

Stay tuned for another installment of ‘Meet the Team’ as we delve into the diverse talents and experiences of the people that form the backbone of Radius.
